LAVENDER TALLOW: The Story Behind Our "Relaxing" Lavender Collection

After Chamomile, the next formula in our Simply Made deep-dive series has to be "Relaxing" Lavender—one of the most familiar botanicals in the world and one of the most comforting scents in our collection.
Our "Relaxing" Lavender formula was originally requested by our grandkids. What began as a special request quickly became a customer favorite for daily moisturizing, evening routines and those quiet moments when you are ready to slow down.
Lavender is often associated with rest, relaxation and bedtime, but there is more to this formula than its beautiful aroma. Lavender also has a long history of traditional use in preparations created to comfort dry, stressed and irritated skin.
By combining lavender essential oil with rich, tallow-based moisture, this collection helps calm the look and feel of irritated skin while turning an ordinary skincare routine into a relaxing ritual.
What Exactly Is Lavender?
Lavender belongs to the mint family and is recognized by its slender stems, silvery-green leaves and clusters of purple flowers.
Although several lavender species and varieties exist, true lavender—Lavandula angustifolia—is especially valued for its gentle, clean floral aroma.
Its scent is floral without being overly sweet, with soft herbal and slightly earthy notes. It is the familiar aroma many people associate with warm baths, clean linens, relaxation and quiet evenings at home.
Lavender grows especially well in sunny, dry areas and has long been associated with the Mediterranean region. The flowers contain naturally occurring aromatic compounds that are carefully captured to produce lavender essential oil.
Because lavender is such a recognizable scent, it can be easy to overlook how special genuine lavender essential oil really is. It is not simply a perfume. It is a concentrated botanical oil whose aroma can vary according to the lavender variety, growing conditions, harvest and distillation process.
We use lavender essential oil for its true botanical aroma. We do not add artificial fragrance to make the product smell like lavender.
Lavender Throughout History
Lavender has been valued for centuries in bathing, beauty, household and traditional wellness practices.
Its flowers were historically added to bathing water, infused into oils, placed among linens and used to scent homes and personal-care preparations. Lavender became closely associated with cleanliness, comfort and rest.
Traditional preparations containing lavender were also used on areas of skin that felt dry, stressed, itchy or uncomfortable. People reached for lavender after spending time outdoors, during dry weather and whenever the skin needed calming care.
Across generations, lavender continued to be included in evening routines because people found its aroma soft, familiar and comforting. That traditional association is one reason lavender remains popular in soaps, massage oils, lotions, bath products and bedtime rituals today.
Traditional use does not prove that every lavender product will produce a medical result. However, it helps explain why this small purple flower has remained treasured across different cultures and generations.
What Researchers Are Studying Today
Modern researchers continue studying lavender and the naturally occurring compounds found in lavender essential oil.
Two of lavender’s best-known aromatic compounds are linalool and linalyl acetate. These compounds help create lavender’s recognizable scent and are among the reasons the plant continues to receive attention in modern research.
Researchers have examined lavender’s possible antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory settings. They have also studied lavender aromatherapy in relation to relaxation, feelings of stress and sleep quality.
Different studies use different lavender varieties, preparations, strengths and methods of application. Some involve inhaled lavender, some involve massage and others use specially prepared oral products.
We describe "Relaxing" Lavender as part of a calming bedtime ritual because of its traditional use, its familiar aroma and the peaceful experience it creates.
More Than a Relaxing Aroma
Customers may initially choose Lavender because they love its scent, but many discover that it is also a practical formula for everyday skin comfort.
Lavender has traditionally been included in topical preparations for skin that feels:
Dry
Tight
Rough
Stressed
Temporarily itchy
Irritated after everyday outdoor exposure
Customers frequently tell us they reach for "Relaxing" Lavender when a mosquito or another bug has left a small area feeling itchy and irritated.
Many dab a small amount onto clean, intact skin around an ordinary bug bite to provide moisture and soothing comfort. They often tell us the uncomfortable, itchy feeling becomes much less noticeable after applying it.
We cannot promise that a cosmetic product will treat an insect bite or stop itching. However, we can share how our customers use it and why lavender has remained associated with comforting irritated skin for generations.
What Is Inside the "Relaxing" Lavender Collection?
The exact formula varies according to the type of product because a whipped lotion, a solid intensive balm and a bar of soap each require a different texture.
Across the collection, we use:
Grass-fed tallow
Shea butter
Coconut oil
Mango butter
Beeswax
Castor oil
Arrowroot powder
Apricot kernel oil
Lavender essential oil
Not every ingredient is in every product. The whipped lotion uses the ingredients needed to create soft, spreadable moisture. The intensive balm includes additional ingredients to make it firm, concentrated and more heat-stable. The soap uses our tallow-and-apricot-kernel-oil cleansing base.
Here is why we chose each ingredient.
Grass-Fed Tallow
Grass-fed tallow is the moisturizing foundation of the Relaxing Lavender Whipped Tallow Lotion and Intensive Balm Stick. It is also part of the base of our Lavender Tallow Soap.
Tallow naturally contains fatty acids, including oleic, palmitic and stearic acids. These lipids help soften and condition the skin while supporting its natural moisture barrier.
In the lotion, tallow creates rich, lasting moisture that spreads easily over larger areas.
In the balm, it provides concentrated moisture for dry, rough or irritated spots.
In the soap, tallow helps produce a firm, long-lasting bar with a rich, creamy lather.
Shea Butter
Shea butter is used in both the whipped lotion and intensive balm.
It comes from the kernels of the African shea tree and contains naturally occurring fatty acids that help soften and condition dry-feeling skin.
Shea butter gives the whipped lotion additional richness and helps the intensive balm provide substantial moisture to areas such as the hands, feet, elbows, knees and heels.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is also included in both the whipped lotion and intensive balm.
It helps condition the skin and gives the formulas a smooth texture that melts readily against the warmth of the body. Coconut oil also helps the richer tallow and botanical butters spread easily without requiring a large amount of product.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender essential oil is the defining botanical ingredient throughout the collection.
We include it for:
Its genuine botanical aroma
Its long history in bathing and skincare
Its traditional association with calming skin comfort
The relaxing atmosphere its scent helps create
The way it turns a simple moisturizing routine into a more intentional experience
Lavender essential oil is concentrated, which is why it is carefully blended into each finished product rather than applied directly to the skin.
Mango Butter
Mango butter is included in the intensive balm but not in the whipped lotion.
It is produced from the kernel of the mango fruit and is valued for its smooth, creamy texture and skin-conditioning fatty acids.
Mango butter adds concentrated moisture while helping the balm glide comfortably across dry or rough-feeling areas. It also contributes to the balm’s firm structure without making it feel excessively waxy.
Beeswax
Beeswax gives the intensive balm its solid twist-up form.
It creates a light layer over the skin that helps slow moisture loss and allows the balm to remain where it is applied. It also makes the balm firmer and more heat-stable than the whipped lotion.
This makes the intensive balm especially useful for targeted application on hands, knuckles, cuticles, elbows, heels, feet and small areas that feel dry or irritated.
Castor Oil
Castor oil is added to the intensive balm to help balance the firmness of the beeswax and botanical butters.
Its thick texture gives the balm a smooth glide, allowing it to move across the skin without dragging. It also contributes to the balm’s rich, concentrated feel.
Arrowroot Powder
Arrowroot powder helps balance the texture of the intensive balm.
A solid balm made with tallow, oils, butters and beeswax can feel excessively slick. Arrowroot powder helps reduce that heavy after-feel while allowing the moisturizing ingredients to remain rich and effective.
Apricot Kernel Oil
Apricot kernel oil is used in the tallow-and-apricot-kernel-oil base of our Lavender Soap.
It is a lightweight botanical oil containing naturally occurring oleic and linoleic acids. In soap, it complements the firm, creamy qualities of tallow and contributes a light conditioning feel.
Together, tallow and apricot kernel oil create a firm, long-lasting bar with a rich lather and a comfortable cleansing experience.
Three Ways to Enjoy "Relaxing" Lavender
Because everyone’s routine and skin are different, we offer "Relaxing" Lavender in three forms.
"Relaxing" Lavender Whipped Tallow Lotion
Our whipped lotion is available in 1 oz and 4 oz containers.
Choose it when you want soft, spreadable moisture for larger areas such as the hands, arms, legs, elbows and feet.
Many customers apply it after an evening bath or shower when the skin is clean and still slightly warm. It can also be used during the day whenever skin feels dry, tight, rough or in need of soothing moisture.
Because the whipped lotion does not contain beeswax, it is more sensitive to heat and may soften or melt when exposed to high temperatures. This does not change the quality of the ingredients, but it can change the whipped texture.
Begin with a small amount. A little truly does go a long way.
"Relaxing" Lavender Intensive Balm Stick
Our 2 oz "Relaxing" Lavender Intensive Balm Stick provides firmer, concentrated moisture that can be applied directly where you want it.
Choose the balm for hands, knuckles, elbows, heels, feet, cuticles and other specific areas that need additional moisture.
It is also the easiest form to use when a small area feels temporarily itchy or irritated after everyday outdoor exposure or an ordinary bug bite. Apply a small amount to clean, intact skin to provide targeted moisture and soothing comfort.
The solid twist-up design is:
More heat-stable than the whipped lotion
Mess-free
Easy to apply directly
TSA-friendly
Convenient for purses and travel bags
Easy to keep beside the bed
Lavender Tallow Soap
Lavender Tallow Soap provides the cleansing step of the collection.
Its tallow-and-apricot-kernel-oil base creates a firm bar with a rich, creamy lather, while lavender essential oil gives it a soft botanical aroma.
Use it during your bath or shower, rinse thoroughly and follow with the whipped lotion or intensive balm while the skin is clean.
Because soap is a rinse-off product, we recommend following with our tallow lotion or balm for a leave-on application that allows the botanical oils to remain on your skin longer.
Which "Relaxing" Lavender Product Is Right for You?
Choose the "Relaxing" Lavender Whipped Tallow Lotion for daily moisture over larger areas.
Choose the "Relaxing" Lavender Intensive Balm Stick for concentrated moisture, targeted application, travel or small areas needing extra comfort.
Choose the Lavender Tallow Soap to begin your routine with a creamy, lavender-scented cleanser.
Many customers use all three: soap in the bath or shower, whipped lotion over larger areas and the intensive balm on hands, feet, elbows, heels or other spots needing targeted attention.
Requested by Our Grandkids, Loved by the Whole Family
Our "Relaxing" Lavender Collection began with a request from our grandkids for a familiar scent they already loved.
That simple request became a collection customers now reach for when they want rich moisture, soothing comfort, a true lavender aroma and a relaxing way to care for their skin.
Whether "Relaxing" Lavender becomes part of your morning routine, your after-shower skincare or a calming bedtime ritual, it offers three simple ways to enjoy one of the most treasured botanical aromas in the world.
Soft. Soothing. Relaxing.
